Holiday Decor - Christmas Village

A few days ago I had this genius, super original idea to buy a Christmas village at the Dollar Store and paint it white.
And then I realized that everyone and their mother had done it.  Not original.  Not genius.  Sigh.
Anyway, this is how the magic happened.
1. Buy Christmas Village at the Dollar Store. Also buy $50 worth of other stuff because its all ONLY $1.

I already used those thumbtacks for a couple of projects. See here.

2. Find your paint.  A lot of other people used spray paint, which I'm sure works really well.  But this is Minnesota, the high on Saturday was 15 degrees, and while I told myself spray paint doesn't work so well in those extreme temperatures, the reality is I didn't want to go outside.  So I used a bottle of white acrylic paint that I have had for approximately ever.

You can buy them here and here, or just get ANY acrylic craft paint and paint brush.
Seriously, buy it at Walmart. The Dollar Store might even have some.
3. Paint everything white.

4. Go do something else while they dry.  Otherwise you will continue to touch them to see if they are dry yet.  They aren't.  It takes about 20 minutes for them to be 100% dry.

5.  Celebrate how awesome and classy you are.  You just made something from the Dollar Store look like it was worth at least $3.  Way to triple your investment.

600 Brass Thumbtacks

What do you think of when you see this?

Do you ever think, "Man, I really need 600 brass thumb tacks." or "I'll figure out what to do with them later."?  If you don't, maybe you should - because let me tell you, they are AWESOME.

I bought these when I was at the dollar store buy a Christmas village... as well as everything else in the store. I knew they were magic when I saw them, I just didn't know what sort of magic they were going to create yet.

This all started with a trip to Ikea for faux sheep skin throws for my dining room chairs.  Also throw pillows.  I am addicted to throw pillows. I've been trying to replace a certain pillow for years but Hubs won't let it go.  Its basically just two layers of fabric at this point. Gross.

My girlfriend had never been to Ikea, so of course it was my duty to ruin her life and take her with me. Mission successful.  On the way home I jokingly (not jokingly) asked if she wanted to redecorate my house real quick.  She was totally down.  We became best friends. We did karate in the garage.  Crafts happened.

First, we gave a big cardboard "K" a makeover with a faux nailhead trim.  I'm sure measuring would be the thorough thing to do, but we just started sticking them in using the scientific "eyeball" method.  Look-it:

Then, I stuck the rest of them in some candles.

Then we pulled everything off the walls and redecorated the downstairs because that's what reasonable people do.  I told my husband to stay out late because we were in the zone.  My thumbs ached.  I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to hang out with that friend anymore.

Here's the tally. My husband likes the "K", the sheepskins, and the new gallery wall.  He doesn't understand the throw pillows, but I'm counting that as a win because most guys in general don't understand throw pillows.  The candles freak him out a little.  That's 4 - 1.  I'll take it.

I Just Wanna....

Truth.

Gold Wedge Sneakers

I got a bit ahead of myself and bought something ridiculous.

GOLD. WEDGE. SNEAKERS.

No online shopping but if you live in the Twin Cities its your lucky day!

I absolutely LOVE them. I also have absolutely no idea what to wear with them.  They are far less tacky than they look.  Not un-tacky, just less tacky.  It seems like such a shame to have such amazing shoes, and then be completely lost on what to wear with them!

Typically when I am at a loss, I head on over to Pinterest (that's a link to my page) and usually get some ideas pretty quickly.  Apparently gold wedge sneakers are not happening yet, because its slim pickin's.

Well hey, if Beyoncé is doing it, at least I know I'm on the right track.  Now to hijack a cab...

I know with shoes like that, you gotta keep the rest of the outfit simple, but so far, I am struggling!

Any ideas, anyone?

DIY Zebra Skin Floor Covers

Zebra Skin Floor Covers

Oh animal prints.  What's not to love. Oh, that's right, the price.
Never fear, you don't have to spend thousands. Just make one!

Here's how I did it.
1. Buy some fabric. Since this is just a floor cover, not a rug, you don't have to worry too much about the backing.  I usually have mine placed on top of another rug/carpet, and just to be safe I put some shelf liner under it (way cheaper than a carpet pad, just as good).  Find something a with a little texture to it, like a fleece or velvet.

fabric + paint (or just mix fabric medium with regular black paint)

2.  Find a style you like.  Either print it out or bring your computer over to your work area.  Mine happened to be on my new wood floors.  But I put down a poster before I painted, so there are only a few paint stains....

3.  Cut out the shape you want.  FYI, don't make sections too thin, otherwise it starts to curl under.  Mine had a tail at one point but that has since been removed.

4.  Paint, Paint, Paint.  And then you'll probably be painting some more.  Remember, since this is based off of something organic, it's not supposed to be symmetrical.  Unless you like that.  Then make it so. Thick stripes, thin stripes, long, short, they all look good.

Excuse the bad picture, I actually did this project about a year ago.

5.  Let it dry, then follow the aftercare on your paint.  Depending on what you use, you might need to wash your new zebra to set the paint.

6.  Enjoy! Roll around on it.  Put it in front of a fire and light some candles.  Because you are awesome and you deserve to be happy.

My Favorite Perfumes

I love perfume.  I love that a scent can change your whole outfit.  Sometimes they are fun and flirty, sometimes they are all business, sometimes they are seductive, but whichever the case - perfume tells the world who I plan on being that day.  I must admit, I am partial to sweet perfumes.  They certainly aren't for everyone, it depends on how they react to your body chemistry.  But I've found them to be the most appealing both to me, and on me.  Below are my go-to scents....

Starting at the top:
Aquolina Pink Sugar - By far the sweetest of the group, this one smells like cookies and baked goods, summer and childhood.  It is the one I wear most often, and probably my favorite. Sephora lists the notes as Bergamot, Sicilian Orange, Raspberry, Fig Leaves, Lily of the Valley, Licorice, Strawberry, Red Fruit, Cotton Candy, Vanilla, Caramel, Musk, and Wood.  It is a very playful scent, and makes me feel a little mischievous!
Burberry Brit -  This one feels a little more business to me.  I wear it when I need to feel professional and in control.  It always gives me a little "I got this" boost. The notes listed are Italian Lime, Icy Pear, Green Almond, White Peony, Sugared Almonds, Amber, Mahogany, Vanilla, and Tonka Bean.
Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy - I like to layer this one with Pink Sugar sometimes.  They are similar, this one is just a bit more mature and a hint tamer.  More of a date perfume than an everyday thing.  The notes are Wild Berries, Mandarins, Honeysuckle, Gardenia, Jasmine, Amber, Caramel, Vanilla, Sandalwood, and Praline.
Chanel Chance - This one I wear when I want to feel like a lady.  Think fancy events or parties.  Its also great for meeting the parents.  Listed notes are white musk, hyacinth and citron, pink pepper, jasmine, fresh vetiver, orris absolute and amber patchouli.
Gucci II - I always come back to Gucci II.  This one is very clean smelling to me, and more floral than the rest.  Sometimes I need a break from the super sweet, so I come back to this.  This one flies a bit under the radar, its a bit harder to find. Mandarin, Bitter Orange, Blackcurrant, Violet, Blackberry, Jasmine, Heliotrope, and Cedarwood make up this light, subtle scent.

*please note, I do not make any promises that you will fall in love with a prince, becomes a princess, and live happily ever after.  But I can't say it WON'T happen either, so better safe than sorry!

Christmas Cards

I went to Walgreens yesterday with the intention of helping my mother-in-law make her Christmas cards. I always check for coupons, and when I spotted a 40% off coupon for cards made at the in-store kiosk, I jumped on it (it's still 20% off online orders with the code FESTIVE20).  I was already THINKING about sending out cards this year, seeing as I'm finally starting to feel somewhat adult-ish and grown ups send Christmas Cards (right?) - so the discount was the incentive I needed to get them ordered and sent out before, most likely, spring or something. This is the template I used, filled in with pictures from our wedding.

What I'm really excited about is addressing them.  I know most people probably find it time consuming and annoying, but I love getting creative with the addresses and really making it something exciting to receive.  I hoped on over to pinterest to get some ideas, and as usual that site never lets me down.  Most of the ones I was drawn to were from the same etsy shop, ilu.lily designs. Nothing I make with a few colorful ballpoint pens is going to come close to what she is doing, but its cool to get inspired!

I also made some return labels by cropping the snowflake and adding it to some plain old mailing labels, along with our address.  Maybe I wasn't supposed to do that, but I bought the cards, so I figure I can do whatever I want with them.

How to Shop at Thrift Stores (Treasure Hunting)

Listed below are some of my tips for how to successfully navigate thrift stores.  Some of them may be a little quirky, and they certainly aren't rules, but they are generally what I go off of whenever I step into a thrift store.

1. It Can Be Whatever You Want it To Be.

Its a plant stand! It's a sculpture! Its my bedside table!!!

What is this? A sculpture? A plant stand? No no no, its my bedside table silly goose.  Things don't always have to be what they are supposed to be.  Don't be brought down by what someone else tells you an item should be.  It can be whatever you want it to be.  Also, don't count out holiday decorations.  Sometimes, I find "holiday decorations" that work with my everyday vibe, so they stay up year round. Sorry I'm not sorry.

2. Ugly Things Need Love Too.

My ugly might not be the same as your ugly.  My point is, don't let a hideous paint job scare you away.  Don't walk away from that funky frame just because the artwork inside is hideous. You can repaint it, you have the technology. Sometimes things are amazing BECAUSE they are ugly. Sometimes you need something ugly, if only because it makes you smile or starts a conversation (think tacky sweaters and bulldog puppies. so ugly, but you know you love them).  And that couch with the horrible fabric, well....

3. Be Careful When It Comes To Fabric.

I'm not saying DON'T buy anything upholstered at a thrift store, just be careful.  Maybe you want to get the couch reupholstered, or you own an industrial strength cleaner.
In which case, go for it!  My general rule is that as things get closer to your body, they should be more luxurious.  Buy those cheap drapes at the thrift store, and take that money you saved to get a high thread count sheet set.  But for goodness sake, don't even think about buying a mattress at Goodwill.

4. Missing Hardware?
Sometimes, people turn in furniture they just bought, disassembled, because it came without the needed hardware and they didn’t feel like shipping it back.  Guess what?  With a few calls and some sweet talking, most manufactures will ship you a new set of hardware for only a few dollars. I’ve done it before, and they usually just need the model number.  Sometimes you get lucky and it’s on the box, but otherwise you can usually find it with some light detective work and your handy friend Google.com.

5. Speaking of Google….
There have defiantly been times when I just KNEW an item was well made, but didn’t recognize the brand.  Googling the brand name will provide you with a wealth of information.  You can see what it’s selling for other places, look for reviews, and do some research.  Sometimes, you might have a major jackpot on your hands.  I’ve found nice, brand name china for pennies, Solid wood furniture for a few dollars, and quite a few designer brand items for FAR below market.  The reverse is also true.  Sometimes you think you’re about to get away with a big score, only to find out you are holding a hunk of junk that falls apart or contains lead or is haunted.
Paid $50, found out its worth about $2,000. Score!
6. Mix High and Low.

As seen here, its amazing what a few nice pieces thrown into the mix does to the whole look.  Put your wedding pictures in those $1 frames. Set your table using wedding china and those wine glasses you got at the Goodwill.  Style your thrift store knick-knacks with a super-luxe candle. Actually, style everything with candles. White candles make everything look better.

7. Have A Shopping List In Mind.

I think one of the reasons I get so darn lucky at thrift stores is because I have a running mental list of what I am looking for.  Once we buy a new house, I'll probably have to start writing it down, but for now, its in my head at all times. Have a game plan.  I think some people shy away from thrift stores because they can be so OVERWHELMING.  Narrow it down. Know what you came for and focus there first.  Once you know which locations are more likely to have what you want, you'll be better able to plan, and less overwhelmed by options.  I usually focus on specifics first, but then I take a lap and check out the rest of the store.

8. Every Store Is Different.

Obviously.  What I mean is that typically, each store has one category (furniture, home goods, etc.) with a disproportionate number of treasures.  Not every time, but usually.  I have the one I go to when I'm looking for dishes, and one for home décor. Another one has an unreasonable number of picture frames.  One in town always has furniture. There is even one that always has leather jackets.

9. Thrift Stores Have Sale Days.

You read that correctly. Example: Goodwill has sales, every week.  They mark a certain color tag down to $2 or something, and everything with that color tag cost $2. I had a problem with leather jackets a few years ago because I kept finding them for $2 and come on, I'm only human. This doesn't apply to furniture, although check your local store, because they have been known to do 50% sales on furniture in the spring. That's when I found that big wood farm table.  I also got a set of upholstered chairs for $1 (breaking my own rule there.... but that's what rules are for).

10. Fill 'er Up!

Fill your cart up. Put everything you're thinking about buying in your cart. I can't tell you the number of times I watched someone grab something I was considering. If you are thinking about buying something, toss it in your cart and give yourself some time to think. Then ask yourself some hard questions....
1. Do I have a place for this? - If you physically don't have a place for it, move on.  If you have no use for it, move on.  If I won't look right in your home, move on.
2. Am I willing to put in the work? - A lot of thrift store finds require a bit (lot) of TLC.  If you don't think you are willing to/can put in the time, move on.  Sure it would look amazing in your dining room if it was just cleaned and painted and repaired.... but if you can't/won't do those things, its just going to get sad and lonely sitting in your garage and give your husband/roommate/mom something to harass you about.
3. Are you excited about it? - Did you scream with you saw it? Did you throw your body across it to protect it before someone else could grab it? Did you slightly hyperventilate when you spotted it because you JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU? Did you call your friend/mom/significant other on the verge of tears because its just perfect? All these things have happened to me before.  Granted, I'm mildly insane, but still, if something excites you, just buy it.  You probably won't regret it, and worst case scenario, you donate it back for someone else to fall in love with.

11. BONUS - Know A Guy.

Or Girl. Or something. Know someone with a truck. Or who will support your ridiculous whims.  That table I bought was heavy as heck.  And I needed it.
I did what any reasonable person would do.  I bought it, ran home and got my husband's truck (lucky guy was out of town that week), loaded the 200lb table into the back, brought it home, and somehow got it into my house. BY MYSELF. And I struggle to open a pickle jar by myself.  As I mentioned before, I may be mental unstable when it comes to home décor.  Don't do what I did.  Enlist some help.  The guys at Goodwill laughed at me, and my husband totally freaked out (because he was concerned about me, not because I took his truck to pick up large, random furniture we didn't need).  But he sure loves that table!

Holiday Travel

Holiday Travel

With the holiday season fast approaching, I've got a few flights on my schedule.  I always struggle with what to wear.  I want to be comfortable, but I also want to look presentable when I get there. The first two outfits totally fit the bill. Cute, comfortable, and easy to move in.  As mom of a 6 year old, being able to move around, and fast, is important, especially in the airport.  I'll admit, the last outfit may be a little more I'm-headed-home-I-don't-care, but at least its not a sweatsuit and ugg boots.

Home Office Inspiration

I'm starting to collect room inspiration. Hopefully, we end up in a house soon, and I will have all sorts of space to decorate.  For now, I'm just dreaming.

I love the feel of this room, but I'm more of a blue girl.  Plus, since the sofa I picked is a sleeper, this room could also function as an additional guest room if needed.  The bigger items are relatively inexpensive, and a lot of the accessories could be added on as our budget allowed.

Holiday Decor Ideas - Bohemian Glam

This is always the time of year I get a little excited. And by a little I mean Buddy the Elf level, buy all the gifts, decorate everything, bake all the cookies excited.

While I don't have the time to decorate my house quite like he decorated the department store, I am excited to start prepping our home for Christmas. I like to change it up every year, last year I did a vintage/woodsy themed tree with lots of plaid and knit ornaments in traditional reds and greens.  This year I'm feeling a bit more glamorous.

I'm planning on following the tutorial over at the gilded hare to make some of those feather ornaments.  I've been hoarding pickle jars like a mad woman to make those snow globe thingys (technical term, I believe), and my husband is starting to look at me funny because of it. I was going to buy puffy paint and clear ornaments, but I'm kind of glad I didn't because The Dollar Tree has really impressed me once again and has basically all those ornaments, or at the very least similar ones.  I have some picture from my haul here.  I went a little crazy in there and ended up buying all the ornaments and a new Christmas village (to be spray painted white) because its all $1 y'all. I mean, come on now.
